Although Edward Norton's most famous Oscar-nominated role is that of reformed skinhead Derek Vinyard in American History X (1998), his other performance recognized by the Academy as Aaron Stampler is nothing short of amazing. Primal Fear, based on the William Diehl novel of the same name, follows attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) as he defends the innocent, doe-eyed teenager (Edward Norton) accused of murdering the archbishop. It's not Aaron's guilt (or lack thereof) that Martin is concerned with, however. The murder of such a heavenly figure is sure to be sensational, and he'll be there- pro bono- to collect whatever publicity comes along for the ride. As the case progresses, it becomes clear there's more to the defendant than meets the eye, but it's less of a whodunit than a sharp look inside Martin and Aaron as people.
As previously stated, it's Edward Norton's breakthrough performance that really stands out, but Richard Gere is not to be overlooked. It's nuanced and refined, though unfortunately this is not appreciated as it should be in the thriller genre. Some of the bigger twists and turns distract from the beauty of the complex characters. These also include the state attorney (John Mahoney), the sharp-witted prosecutor (Laura Linney) and a psychologist (Frances McDormand). Still, Primal Fear is more than a courtroom drama and has too much sophistication to be thrown in with the gore-porn thrillers, making it an intriguing watch, even after the first viewing.

For what it's worth, I think this is a terribly produced trailer. Don't be turned off by it.
