In 2092, Nemo (Jared Leto) is the last living mortal at 118 years of age. Humans are now able to regenerate through stem cells, so this last survivor of a near-lost time has become the subject of many people's curiosity. He begins to tell his story to a reporter (Daniel Mays), but the narrative is confusing and unclear, his life changing irrevocably at ages nine, sixteen, and thirty-four. This all creates a Schrodinger's-cat scenario- creating three separate but possible love lives: one with Elise (Sarah Polley), another with Jean (Linh Dan Pham), and finally one with Anna (Diane Kruger). However, as the film goes on, it becomes more and more clear that the truth to these matters is not what is important- it's the human connections that string them all together.
Although the ambition of Mr. Nobody often exceeds its ability, the transitions are undoubtedly smooth, each scene sliding cleanly into the next with a sinuous grace. The visual beauty of the film is nearly great enough to patch any flaws in the story structure (at times the theory of connection is forced), and Leto is at his best, a close second to his recent Academy-Award-winning role in The Dallas Buyer's Club. For anyone who enjoyed films like The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Fountain, orCloud Atlas, or any of Charlie Kaufman's films, Mr. Nobody should be next on your list. It's a satisfying break from the sequel-ridden cesspool that Netflix seems to attract.
